Dealing with fraud
If you suspect that your organisation has or is being defrauded:
- Investigate as soon as possible - if there really is fraud taking place, it will only get worse.
- Safeguard all records - those responsible for the fraud may try to destroy evidence.
- Avoid accusing anyone - especially publicly - this can result in libel or slander court cases.
- Call for assistance - from your head office, local accountants and auditors.
- Consider involving the local police - too much fraud is ignored and those responsible often succeed in finding new posts and opportunities to commit fraud again.
- Discuss the problem with peers in your own and other organisations. You will often find that you are not alone and that there is a way out of the mess.
